How to Get Rid of Clothes Moths (& Keep Them Gone!)

Identify the Problem

Are you spotting moths in your home? While some moths are after your clothing, others may be attracted to the plants in your home. There are only two moth species that can be a threat to your clothing items: the casemaking clothes moth and the webbing clothes moth—both a yellow or gray color, about 1 cm long.

Examine your clothing and try to identify any webs that may be left behind from the moths. If you notice any small holes in your clothing, this may be a result of clothes moths chewing through the fibers of the materials. They are attracted to materials such as wool, cashmere, and animal fur. Also, they prefer to inhabit dark and humid spaces.

Clean Your Clothes & Space

Now that you’ve identified the moths, how do you get rid of them?

Any clothing with material that has been damaged past the point of repair should be thrown away. If clothing items are slightly damaged they can be salvaged by washing them with warm water or dry cleaning. Before attempting to wash these clothing items, be sure to check the tags for washing instructions. You will then want to clean your storage space by vacuuming the area, removing unnecessary clutter, and wiping down surfaces. This will ensure that your space is clean and free of clothes moths.

Prevent Future Clothes Moths

To prevent future clothes moths from inhabiting your storage spaces, it is important to take a few precautionary measures to ensure they stay moth-free. Clothes that will be untouched for a few months should be stored in airtight bins or vacuum bags. Since moths prefer dark environments, installing lighting to keep the area well lit will assist in keeping moths away. At least once per season, use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe down surfaces and corners. Regularly vacuuming will prevent dirt and dust from accumulating.
